Why Beef Tallow Belongs in Your kitchen-Not on your Face

As a licensed esthetician with over a decade of experience, I’ve heard some wild skincare trends. But one that keeps resurfacing—and makes me cringe every time—is beef tallow being used as a moisturizer or even an SPF.

Let me be real with you: beef tallow is fat. Cook with it all you want (hello, crispy potatoes), but putting it on your skin? That’s a hard no from me.

Here’s why:

1. It’s Just Fat—Not a Miracle Moisturizer

Sure, beef tallow has some moisturizing properties, but so do plenty of well-formulated, science-backed products that don’t clog your pores or make your skin feel like it’s been basted. Tallow isn’t designed for the skin—it’s an animal byproduct. It lacks the stability, consistency, and cleanliness that your skin deserves.

2. No Regulations = No Guarantees

Unlike professional skincare products that go through testing, standardization, and quality control, DIY or small-batch tallow products are unregulated. That means the composition can vary wildly, and improper processing could lead to contamination or rancidity. You wouldn’t rub old bacon grease on your face, right? (Gross, I know—but it’s the same idea.)

3. No UV Protection—At All

Some online voices claim beef tallow has a “natural SPF.” Let me clear that up: it doesn’t. True sun protection comes from ingredients like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or chemical UV filters like avobenzone. Tallow contains none of these. In fact, layering it on in the sun could actually increase sensitivity, making you more prone to sun damage.

4. It Can Worsen Acne and Sensitivity

Beef tallow is comedogenic, which means it can clog pores—especially for those with oily, acne-prone, or sensitive skin. It might feel rich and nourishing at first, but long-term, it can trap bacteria and lead to breakouts or irritation. Not cute. Not healing.

Bottom Line:

Your skin is sacred, and it deserves ingredients that are clean, safe, and proven to work—not hype from social media. Stick with formulations that are science-backed, professionally tested, and meant for your unique skin type. Save the beef tallow for the frying pan—not your face.

Xoxo,
